Rob Jackson High School Principal Rob Jackson is currently serving as the Founding Principal of a brand-new public high school in North Carolina that will open in August of 2009. He previously served as the Principal of another public high school in the same county. In his last year as the Principal there, the school posted significant gains in 6 of the 7 State End-of-Course exams administered the previous year (Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Civics & Economics, U.S. History, English 1.) In addition, the school's percentage of students earning proficiency on the State's 10th Grade Writing Test more than doubled over the previous year. Prior to his tenures as a High School Principal, he served as the Founding Principal of an Elementary School in one of the Top Three most affluent areas of the state. The school earned the designation of (Honor) School of Excellence at the completion of its initial year of operation and has maintained that designation each year since. It was also named a North Carolina Super Safe School for three consecutive years while he was the Principal. He has been honored during his career as the Outstanding Senior in the Elementary Education Department of Western Carolina University, the Sallie Mae First Year Teacher of the Year, named a North Carolina Principal Fellow, and was awarded the Jack McCall Award through the Principals Executive Program. Mr. Jackson has been blessed with amazing mentors during his career and has endeavored to mentor others. In the last five years, Mr. Jackson has helped eight of the Assistant Principals who served with him be promoted to the principalship, three teachers promoted to the position of Assistant Principal, and two teachers promoted to positions as Curriculum Coordinators. He has also served as an official mentor to two principals. He has served as a School Secretary, a Bus Driver, an AfterSchool Associate, a Teacher and an Assistant Principal. He also served in the US Navy onboard the USS Iwo Jima and brings a wealth of experience from a variety of perspectives. He enjoys working with educators to help them create true learning communities that value education as a means to overcome ignorance and engagement as a means to overcome apathy. Affiliates DR. BRYAN SETSER Chief Executive Officer of North Carolina Virtual Public School Since his hire in December of 2007 by the State Board of North Carolina, Dr. Setser's innovative practices and transformative leadership style have tripled online enrollment to over 36,000 students, standards and test scores have risen dramatically in all subject areas, and Dr. Setser continues to provide a vision that is well on its way to establishing the North Carolina Virtual Public School and Learn and Earn Online as national models for e-learning as the North Carolina Virtual Public School is ranked 8th in the nation.Dr. Setser serves on the North Carolina Distance Learning Association's Board, is a member of the Leadership for Innovation Committee of the North Carolina State Board of Education. Moreover, he sits on the E-learning Commission for North Carolina, and is a member of the National Advisory Boards for Wimba and NBC Learn. Dr. Setser also serves as a Southern Association of Colleges and Schools evaluator and works as a Baldrige National Examiner of world class organizations for the United States Department of Commerce. A sought after state and national speaker, Dr. Setser regularly appears at state and national conferences, such as the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the American Educational Research Association, the National Virtual School Symposium, Apple's Executive Academies, the Southern Regional Education Board, the State Virtual Leaders Alliance, and the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference to name a few. Dr. Setser also blogs extensively and his work has been published in print on several occasions throughout his career. Notable accomplishments include: - Centennial National High School English Teacher of the Year by Philadelphia University - A three time high school soccer conference and regional coach of the year - Awarded the Jack McCall Leadership Award from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill by the Principals' Executive Program - Principal of the Year – Union County Public Schools - During his tenure as Chief Quality Officer for the Iredell-Statesville School district, the district was one of the first thirty in the Southeastern United States to receive SACS district accreditation. - Setser's work with the America Quality and Productivity Council established the district as a national best practice site for staff development - Holds a doctorate from University of North Carolina at Charlotte, an educational specialist degree from UNC-Charlotte, a master's degree in educational leadership from Winthrop University, and a bachelor's degree in English from East Carolina University. - Adjunct professor - North Carolina State University - Dr. Setser lives in Raleigh , North Carolina and has two children, Sydney (12) and Sims (6).
DAVID EDWARDS
Chief Communications and Professional Learning Officer, North Carolina Virtual Public School Mr. Edwards spent 10 years working in the printing and graphics field prior to making the transition into education. He began his educational career as the Distance Learning Coordinator for Lenoir Community College where he built the program from 1telecourse to over 35 distance learning courses to include the first hybrid Court Reporting and Captioning program for distance learning delivery (internet and 2-way videoconference). Mr. Edwards spent the next 2 years working in economic development as a Technology and Distance Learning Systems Specialist for the NC Global TransPark. He eventually assumed the position of Director of Education and Training for the TransPark and served in that capacity for an additional 2 years. Under his direction, the education center increased programming and usage by 250% and was instrumental in bringing the Advanced Manufacturing Training Center to the TransPark. His advocacy for technology-led economic development also led to the design and implementation of the Virtual Incubator Platform for Eastern NC portal (ww.vipforenc.com) in partnership with the e-NC Authority. Mr. Edwards also served as the e-Champion for Lenoir County. Mr. Edwards then spent 2 years leading the implementation of the IMPACT model as Technology Director for Lenoir County Public Schools. He was responsible for launching 2 additional initiatives that included a data warehouse for student and program accountability as well as developing a partnership with the International Society for Technology in Education to design and implement professional development for media and technology programs. Prior to becoming the Chief Communications and Professional Learning Officer in May 2007, Mr. Edwards was one of the initial NC Virtual Public School Advisory Board members. Mr. Edwards holds a bachelor’s degree from Mount Olive College in Business and Organizational Development and a master’s degree in Instructional Technology from East Carolina University. He is currently beginning his doctoral work at NCSU in Curriculum and Instruction. His passion for making a difference in education and economic development has also led him to serve as the President of the NC Distance Learning Association and as Vice-Chairman of the NC Connectivity Council.
